Shelby Heckenlaible has been selected as the Pierre School District’s Teacher of the Year for 2026.
Heckenlaible is a 3rd Grade teacher at Buchanan Elementary School.
The school district’s criteria for Teacher of the Year takes into account positive roles the teacher assumes in the community, and respect expressed by students, parents and colleagues.
Every school district’s Teacher of the Year is considered for a regional honor, and those recipients become nominees for South Dakota Teacher of the Year,
Buchanan Principal Jennifer Nedrebo says: “Mrs. Heckenlaible is very deserving of the PSD Teacher of the Year recognition! Mrs. Heckenlaible’s impact on students, families, and colleagues is both meaningful and lasting.
“In the classroom, she creates engaging, thoughtful learning experiences that spark curiosity and build confidence. She truly knows her students, supporting each child with care and creating a safe, welcoming environment where they feel valued and capable.
“Mrs. Heckenlaible models a strong growth mindset, continually reflecting and learning to better serve her students. She is also a positive, collaborative presence among colleagues and a trusted partner to families, communicating with warmth and consistency.
“Mrs. Heckenlaible exemplifies excellence in teaching, leadership, and heart. She is truly deserving of this honor!”
Troy Wiebe, Director of Education for the Pierre School District, says: “Mrs. Heckenlaible’s ability to impact the whole building is evident with her participation on building committees and the relationships she has with colleagues. She is a positive team member and supports initiatives. Her ability to develop relationships with students, parents, and staff helps build a positive school community and fosters a culture of learning.”

This is a very tough decision each year as we have many outstanding teachers throughout the district. Mrs. Heckenlaible is a superstar in the classroom. She has a huge heart, positive attitude, loves kids, and loves teaching. Her dedication to her students is second to none!”

The South Dakota Teacher of the Year will be announced at the annual Systems Change Conference for educators.
The South Dakota Teacher of the Year Program is made possible by the National Teacher of the Year Program, a project of the Council of Chief State School Officers in partnership with the Voya Foundation.
