South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden’s plan to cut property taxes, Senate Bill 96, has passed in the House of Representatives (March 5, 2026) and is on its way to his desk to be signed into law.
Rhoden is now focusing on delivering the passage of Senate Bill 245, which will be on the House floor on Monday.
Rhoden said SB 96 will deliver significant property tax relief, and together with SB 245, “will deliver the largest property tax cut in South Dakota history.” He said SB 96 will give homeowners in each county the option to reduce their own property taxes.
Earlier this week, Rhoden worked with legislative leadership in both chambers to negotiate an agreement to deliver property tax relief to South Dakotans. The deal is built on the following principles:
- Property tax relief should be felt both statewide and in the communities where taxes have increased the most;
- This relief should be felt in both the short- and long-term; and
- Property taxes should be more predictable and more transparent for South Dakotans.
