Coming into the Class B Girls State Tournament, you could throw seeds and records out the window. Each team came in with a belief they could be cutting down the nets on Saturday, and Corsica-Stickney proved that to be true earlier today with their 65-56 upset of the one-seeded Lyman Raiders.
Lyman started strong with Jordyn Scott knocking down three triples in the first half and jumping out to a 14-6 lead. The Raiders looked like they might be on their way to a confident victory, but the Jaguars knew stayed the course with physical play and a strong first half shooting performance from Hadynn Johnson.
Corsica-Stickney still hadn’t earned a lead, but they were closing fast. The Jaguar defense continued to hassle Lyman, forcing some misses and taking Mak Scott out of the game completely. Scott did not score her first points until midway through the second half as the Jags swung the momentum fully in their favor.
With the Raiders in foul trouble, they were unable to play the style of defense they’re accustomed to. Even on the back of a 28-point performance from Jordyn Scott, Lyman would fall victim to the hot shooting from Corsica-Stickney’s Braylee Bordewyk who finished with 26, Hadynn Johnson who ended the game with 15 and Sophie DeLange who had 12.
The Jaguars will advance to the winners bracket and will face Ethan who beat Colman-Egan 51-42 at 5:00 PM CT Friday night. Lyman will take on Colman-Egan in the consolation bracket tomorrow at 11:00 AM CT on KPLO, coverage beginning at 10:40 AM.
