The Lyman Raiders came into Friday’s contest hoping to bounce back from their upset loss to the eighth-seeded Corsica-Stickney Jaguars Thursday. They’d have to get through the Colman-Egan Hawks who were led by superstar freshman Jolie Flatten, who was coming off a 26-point performance in their loss to Ehtan Thursday.
Raider head coach Cody Volmer knew from film study that the Hawks would likely defend in man-to-man, so he knew this would fall on the shoulders of senior Mak Scott who was held to just six points in their first-round game. Scott got to work early and matched her point total from Thursday in the first quarter. Colman-Egan built a bit of an advantage thanks to some sharp-shooting from Braylee Landis, but a late push by the Raiders saw them tie it up at 27 apiece carrying the momentum into the break.
Even with momentum on their side, the Raiders saw sophomore Jordyn Scott in foul trouble early earning her fourth in just the second quarter. Lyman knew a clean defensive half would be necessary to avoid falling to 0-2 in bracket play.
Both Scotts went straight to the post to find their success, Jordyn Scott finding most of her production from the free throw line where she knocked down 5-8 and finishing with 10 and 12 rebounds. Mak Scott dominated the paint on both ends, finishing with 21 points and 15 total rebounds.
The Hawks continued to answer just about every Lyman bucket as Landis and Flatten kept the Hawks hopes alive combining for 37 of the Hawks 48. Though Lyman’s defense would stiffen up and they would hold on for the 53-48 victory.
Lyman will square up with the winner of Bennett County and Centerville tomorrow at 12:45 PM CT on KPLO and DRGnews.com/kplo/. The Hawks will face the loser of that matchup in the game prior at 11:00 AM CT.
