Republican voters in Hughes County will pick from four different candidates to fill three spots on the county commission when they get their June 2, 2026, election ballot. The choices are incumbent Bill Abernathy of Pierre, incumbent Connie Hohn of Pierre, incumbent Rob Fines from Pierre and challenger Pat Steber of Pierre.
For the Hughes County Sheriff’s position, Jeff Metzinger from Pierre is unopposed and incumbent Thomas Oliva from Pierre is unopposed for the position of Hughes County Finance Officer.
In Stanley County, District 3 incumbent Commissioner Dana Iversen is being challenged by Darby Nutter and District 5 incumbent Commissioner Gary Grittner is being challenged by Chris Carter. District 1 Commissioner Craig Heller is unopposed.
Incumbent Republican Stanley County Auditor Phil Burtsch of Fort Pierre is unopposed while Democrat incumbent Patricia Duffy of Fort Pierre is unopposed for Stanley County Register of Deeds.

April 27— The Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce Government Outreach Committee will hold a candidate forum Monday, April 27, 2026, beginning at 6pm CT at the Ramkota Hotel and Convention Center in Pierre. The candidates for Pierre School Board, Pierre Mayor, Hughes County Commission and District 24 House and Senate are all invited to participate.
