Mass of Christian Burial for Lyle Elk Nation, age 66, of Eagle Butte, SD, will be Tuesday, April 5, 2022, At 10:00AM MST at All Saints Catholic Church in Eagle Butte, SD. A Wake service will be held on Monday April 4, 2022, at 7:00PM-9:00PM MST. Lyle passed away on March 30, 2022, at Avantara Health Center in Pierre, SD.
Lyle Kenneth Elk Nation (Thaopi Nunpa – Wounded Twice) born on December 12, 1955 to the Late Levi Elk Nation and Mary Jane Thompson at the Cheyenne Agency.
He grew up in the Thunder Butte area and at the age of three he began living with Aunt and Uncle Edward and Alphonsine (Stricker) Takes The Gun. He attended school at the Thunder Butte Day School, Dupree Public School and the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI) in Albuquerque, NM.
In 1989, Lyle returned to South Dakota and started working at the CRST Telephone Authority’s Sales and Service Department as a Press Bindery until Sales and Service stopped printing in 2010. He then moved to the Cheyenne River Gas Company as a Clerk until 2015 when he made the decision to retire.
In his younger years, Lyle loved playing sports. He played fast-pitch softball, slow-pitch softball and basketball. Lyle and his late brother James were both known as some of the best fast-pitch softball pitchers in our area. Lyle and his Thunder Butte softball team was known as the Thunder Butte Bullfrogs. Later on in life Lyle decided to hang up his mitt and become the Coach. Lyle started his first softball team named the Falcons. He then started a traveling basketball team known as the Rebels; then another younger softball team: “Sioux Nation.” Lyle formed many bonds with all his players while traveling all over South Dakota to various tournaments with them. He highly enjoyed coaching the boys.
Lyle was a devoted Uncle to his niece Ashley and nephew Charlie. He made sure they always had what they needed for basketball and softball. He was an even better Grandpa to his Grandsons Levi and Kevin Elk Nation. Lyle would go out of town every weekend, returning with toys and snacks for his grandsons. He was very proud to be a Grandpa.
Lyle is survived by his Niece Ashley Elk Nation, Nephew Charlie Marshall, Brother in Law Tony Marshall, Grandsons Levi and Kevin Elk Nation, Shayden and Marty Marshall, West Claymore Granddaughters Tyus, Keya and Briliegh Marshall, Alexa Claymore, Evany and Jes Lawrence. Sisters; Norma and Berna Tiokasin. Cousin Sisters; Lavae (Hermus) Red Horse, Bridger SD, Codi High Elk, Thunderbutte, SD, Mildred (Tommy) Carpenter, Lodge Grass, MT and Lois High Elk, Spearfish, SD. Cousin Brothers; Tony Stricker, Wakpala, SD, Rick Laundreaux, Eagle Butter, SD.
