South Dakota received $1.25-billion in CARES funding from the federal government, $200 million of which will be reimbursed to cities and counties through the newly established Local Government COVID Recovery Fund.
Governor Kristi Noem says funds will be distributed according to current US Census Bureau population data.
Noem says there may still need to be a special legislative session this year.
The CARES Act money comes with restrictions on how it can be used. Noem has said she doesn’t want to use the monies to create new programs or grow government. She wants to use them to cover COVID-19 related expenses and lost revenue.
Noem says the $1.25 billion isn’t the only federal money coming into the state.
In central South Dakota, towns and counties receiving funds include:
- Hughes County– over $1.15 million
- Stanley County– over $204,000
- Pierre– over $3.13 million
- Fort Pierre– over $501,000
