PIERRE – Several proposed amendments to the South Dakota High School Activities Association constitution were approved in the organization’s annual meeting, which concluded Wednesday.
Another amendment would slightly change the eligibility appeals process. It is on three levels, with the first being heard by the SDHSAA Executive Director, the second by a three-member panel that can include superintendents, high school principals, activities directors and school board members, and the third by the SDHSAA Board of Directors. The proposed change would be in the second level, where that three-member panel would now include three SDHSAA board members.
Two amendments involve home-schooling. One would allow competition by seventh- and eighth-grade home school students. Another would allow students receiving alternative education to participate in activities.
Two other amendments would update the SDHSAA by-laws to come into line with the organization’s current practices. One calls for a resolution authorizing a school’s membership to be signed by the superintendent and the board of education chair. Another notes that the SDHSAA has suspended membership dues and fees.
Another amendment deletes a reference to No Child Left Behind from transfer rules.
These amendments require 60% approval from member schools in order to pass.
