The City of Pierre has rezoned land it owns in the east central part of town from agriculture to industrial. In a related move, the City Commission approved an engineering contract for the rezoned area.
The rezoned area, located west of the City’s material recovery site, will eventually be used as a material processing site.
Utilities Director Brad Palmer says they’re relocating the town’s stock pile of materials from various locations and putting them at the one site. He says with the new zoning, Pierre city staff will be allowed to crush the recycled concrete and asphalt on site, making operations more efficient.
Pierre is also planning to make the site more usable in the future. At this week’s meeting (June 21, 2022), the City Commission approved a $27,480 contract with Brosz Engineering to develop a storm water drainage plan that allows for road development.
Palmer says the area has a major ravine that needs to be filled in to expand usable space. He says proper drainage and road development will be key to keeping the land use viable.
Pierre expects to start processing materials at the site before the end of the year.
