The Walworth County Commission held a regular meeting on Tuesday, July 19th.
Coming out of an executive session on a personnel matter at the beginning of the meeting, Commission Chairman Jim Houck made a statement regarding public forum during commission meetings.
LANDFILL
Commissioner Duane Mohr reported some landfill fees will be increasing in January. These changes will be approved at the next meeting, and the three haulers that will be effected will be notified.
SHERIFF’S OFFICE
Sheriff Josh Boll requested a new starting wage of $22.25 to $23.25 for the deputy sheriff position, depending on experience, and this was approved. Commissioner Scott Schilling voted “no”.
Discussion then focused on hiring bonuses for new full-time employees currently and for future employees in the new budget year. Some commissioners questioned the reasons for the difficulties in getting applicants, not only for the sheriff’s office, but for all county offices. Sheriff Josh Boll told the board he wants to continue to provide law enforcement services to best of his ability without causing safety issues for his office.
County Auditor Deb Kahl told the commissioners why some people have left the courthouse…
The board then went into executive session to talk further about these issues. When they came out of executive session it was mentioned that the hiring bonus issue was tabled, and Sheriff Boll will continue to work on setting up the meeting with Mobridge on the inmate transport situation. The meeting will be posted publicly.
CAFO
The commission had extended for another year the conditional use permits for a proposed CAFO in Walworth County. Commission Chairman Houck said they have not yet paid the fees or filed the permits with the state. The board passed a motion to withdraw the motion made on the extention of the conditional use permit, which will be triggered if the permit is not filed with the state DENR by August 2nd. The zoning officer will attempt to notify them.
BUDGET MEETING
A meeting to discuss the budget is set for Tuesday, July 26th, at 9am.
