The City of Pierre will officially christen its new skate park this week. A ribbon cutting ceremony for the city skate park, located in Griffin Park, is set for Thursday, July 28 at 6 p.m. The event will feature giveaways, the Dakota Cruiser, comments from Mayor Harding, and a brief skateboarding demonstration from a local skater.
The event is open to the public. “The skate park did open last November,” said Mindy Cheap, Recreation Superintendent. “But because it was late in the season, we decided to wait until summer for an official grand opening.”
The 5,000 sq. ft. concrete pad includes half pipes, quarter pipes, bank ramps, a grind ledge, jump boxes and more. The City’s skate park was previously located just west of the current skate park. The skate park was relocated to its new spot to make way for construction of the new outdoor pool. As part of the relocation, a new pad was poured and all new equipment was purchased.
