The Ag Land Assessment Task Force of the South Dakota legislature held their first meeting of the interim this week (Aug. 16, 2022) in Pierre.
Task Force Chairman, Representative Kirk Chaffee of Whitewood laid out some of their goals.
There have been complaints, mostly from grassland owners, that the productivity model of property tax assessment has treated much of that land like cropland.
Department of Revenue Secretary Mike Houdyshell says its up to each county to make the land assessments under state law.
Task Force member Representative Spencer Gosch of Glenham says the system is going in the wrong direction.
The task force will meet again in October.
