BRANDON – An early deficit to an 11AAA team on the road did not faze the Pierre Governors.
Pierre trailed 21-0 and 28-7 in the first half before scoring on five consecutive possessions Friday to take an impressive 43-34 win at Brandon Valley. Quarterback Lincoln Kienholz passed for four touchdowns and ran for two for the Governors (6-0).
After Pierre fumbled the ball away, Brandon Valley took the lead with 6:23 left in the first quarter on a 83-yard touchdown pass from Lucas Slack to Dylan Langerock.
After Pierre fumbled the ball away on the first play of the next possession, the Lynx took a 14-0 lead on a five-yard touchdown run by Delvoun Spears-Witte. 5:10 was left in the first quarter.
The Governors punted and took a 21-0 lead with a 53-yard scoring pass from Slack to Dveyoun Bonwell-Witte with 1:06 left.
Kienholz ran in a one-yard touchdown to put Pierre on the board with 10:28 left in the first half, but Slack answered with a Brandon Valley four-yard rushing touchdown with 3:08 remaining and the Lynx led 28-7.
Just before halftime, Pierre converted a third-and-25 into a first down with a 25-yard run by Kienholz, who shortly thereafter threw a four-yard TD pass to Jett Zabel with 13 seconds left and the Governors had cut Brandon Valley’s halftime lead to 28-14.
Then, Pierre made the deficit only 28-21 with only 59 seconds elapsed in the third quarter when Kienholz ran in a 54-yard scoring play.
Slack scored from a yard out on Brandon Valley’s next possession, but the conversion was missed and BV led 34-21 with 4:51 left in the third.
The Governors came within 34-28 on their next drive, which ended with a four-yard touchdown pass from Kienholz to Zabel with 2:42 to go in third quarter.
After stopping Brandon Valley, Pierre then took their first lead a 35-34 with 9:50 to go on a 10-yard score from Kienholz to Zabel.
The Governors stopped the Lynx again, then took a 41-34 lead with 3:23 remaining as Kienholz found Jack Merkwan for a three-yard touchdown pass. Pierre then decided to go for a two-point conversion and Kienholz dove in for the points and the final margin.
Kienholz was 22-of-30 for 320 yards passing with four touchdowns and an interception. He rushed 20 times for 197 yards and two touchdowns. Merkwan had nine catches for 112 yards. Zabel caught seven for 117 yards.
In six games this season, Kienholz now has thrown for 1,909 yards and 27 touchdowns while running for 659 yards and 12 touchdowns.
