HURON – As Governor Football cruised again, another record came into the possession of Lincoln Kienholz.
Kienholz passed for 223 yards Friday in Pierre’s 59-7 win at Huron to become South Dakota’s 11-man record-holder for passing yardage with 7,810. Former Brandon Valley quarterback Austin Sumner, who currently is the quarterbacks coach at Sioux Falls Jefferson, had held the record with 7,629.
Kienholz is now 857 yards short of the all-time South Dakota record-holder, Cody Thompson, who passed for 8,667 yards from 2017-20 at 9-man program Lemmon/McIntosh.
On Friday, Kienholz passed for three touchdowns, while running for 118 yards and two more scores.
Pierre (7-0) forced a fumble on Huron’s first play from scrimmage. Gavin Stotts knocked the ball out of the hands of Huron quarterback Mason Davis and Deegan Houska recovered. Two plays later, Kienholz threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Brecken Krueger.
After a Huron punt, Kienholz ran in a keeper from seven yards on fourth down for a 14-0 lead.
Later in the first quarter, Kienholz hit Cade Kaiser for a 53-yard score and Pierre led 21-0 after one quarter.
Huron scored early in the second quarter as Quinston Luellman Clark scored on a 15-yard run.
A Jacob Mayer fumble recovery later led to a Kienholz 88-yard touchdown run with 1:17 left in the half and Pierre led 28-7 at halftime.
On the first Governor possession of the second half, Kienholz found Kaiser from 15 yards with 10:39 left in the third quarter for a 35-7 Pierre lead.
Pierre’s defense scored soon after on a 41-yard interception return for a touchdown by Spencer Easland for a 42-7 Governor advantage, which was the score at the end of three quarters.
Rylan Derry kicked a 30-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter, and the defense later scored again on a 31-yard fumble return touchdown by Trey Lewis. Dawson Getz threw a 20-yard scoring pass to Zander Bowman for the game’s final touchdown.
Pierre will host Tea Area Friday at Hollister Field at Phil Trautner Stadium in a rematch of the 2021 11AA championship game, where Pierre rallied from 27-7 down in the third quarter to win 30-27 for the Governors’ fifth straight state title.
