OCTOBER 25, 2022:
A 16-year-old boy from Mitchell has been identified as the person who died Wednesday (Oct. 19, 2022) in a two-vehicle crash four miles north of Ethan.
Preliminary crash information from the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates Benjamin Waldner was driving a 2008 Ford-250 pickup southbound on South Dakota Highway 37 and in the wrong lane when it collided with a northbound 2018 Kenworth Construction T800 semi-truck and trailer. The enclosed trailer contained cabinets.
Waldner was pronounced dead at the scene. The 73-year-old male driver of the semi-truck, Rickey Nelsen of Vermillion, received minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to a Mitchell hospital. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
