The reservoirs along the upper Missouri River Basin are low, but still approximately 14 million acre feet higher than the system was during its historic low of 33.9 MAF in 2007.

Larsen says releases from the Oahe Dam Reservoir this winter will be below normal.
The NOAA/National Weather Service Winter Outlook released last week (Oct. 20, 2022) shows anticipated temperatures being colder than normal along the Missouri River in South Dakota during December, January and February. The same area has equal changes of above, below or average precipitation for that same time frame.
