SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The man convicted of attempting to kidnap then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and attacking her husband with a hammer has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. A federal judge handed down the sentenced for 44-year-old David DePape on Friday (May 17, 2024). Prosecutors had asked for a 40-year prison term. Jurors found DePape guilty last November of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official. DePape admitted during trial testimony that he broke into the Pelosis’ San Francisco home on Oct. 28, 2022, intending to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage. He also admitted to bludgeoning Paul Pelosi with a hammer after police showed up at the home.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — David DePape has testified in the federal trial against him over last year’s attack against former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband. DePape told jurors Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2023) that he went to the Pelosis’ home as part of a larger plan to end corruption in the United States. Testimony wrapped up later Tuesday, with closing arguments expected Wednesday. DePape has pleaded not guilty to attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official with intent to retaliate against the official for performance of their duties. Paul Pelosi testified Monday, recounting the attack publicly for the first time.

David DePape has pleaded not guilty to attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official. The attack on then-82-year-old Paul Pelosi occurred in the early hours of Oct. 28, 2022. His defense attorneys say they don’t dispute that DePape attacked Pelosi but intend to shed light on his motivations. Prosecutors say they will show clear evidence that DePape committed the crimes.

UNDATED (AP)- Newly released video shows the husband of former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi fighting for control of a hammer with his assailant during a brutal attack in the couple’s San Francisco home last year. The footage was released Friday (Jan. 27, 2023) after a coalition of news agencies, including The Associated Press, sought access to evidence prosecutors played in court during a preliminary hearing last month. The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office had refused to make it available to journalists. The evidence includes portions of Paul Pelosi’s 911 call, as well as images from Capitol police surveillance cameras, a body camera worn by one of the responding police officers and video from the suspect’s interview with police. David DePape has pleaded not guilty in separate state and federal cases.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The man accused of attacking House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband in their San Francisco home carried zip ties with him when he broke in. That word comes from a person briefed on the investigation who spoke on condition to anonymity to The Associated Press. It’s the latest parallel to the Capitol riot of Jan. 6, 2021. Police say the suspect confronted 82-year-old Paul Pelosi early Friday (Oct. 28, 2022) and, according to AP reporting, demanded to know, “Where is Nancy? Rioters who swarmed the Capitol trying to overturn Joe Biden’s election victory over Donald Trump roamed the halls and shouted loud calls demanding “Where’s Nancy?” Some in the siege were seen inside the Capitol carrying zip ties.
OCTOBER 28, 2022:
WASHINGTON (AP) — The suspect who attacked Paul Pelosi, the House speaker’s husband, specifically targeted their San Francisco home, people familiar with the matter said Friday. The intruder shouted ‘Where is Nancy?’ one person familiar with the situation said. Pelosi was attacked and severely beaten by an assailant with a hammer. Pelosi, 82, suffered blunt force trauma to his head and body, according to the two people with knowledge of the investigation into the attack who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing probe. He was being treated by doctors for bruising, severe swelling and other injuries. Pelosi’s spokesman Drew Hammill said he was expected to make a full recovery.
