SIOUX FALLS – Finally!
A fifth-set rally led the Pierre Governors to a consolation round victory Friday over Rapid City Stevens, 25-20, 25-21, 19-25, 22-25, 15-9 at the SDHSAA Class AA State Volleyball Tournament at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. Pierre ended a 14-match state tournament losing streak, dating back to the 2008 championship match.
Pierre (17-6) held off Stevens in the first two sets before the Raiders rallied to force a fifth set. Down 5-4 in the deciding set, the Governors then scored seven straight points before staving off Stevens to advance to Saturday’s fifth-place match.
Ayvrie Kaiser and Reese Terwilliger each had 15 kills for the Governors. Kaiser had three block assists. Terwilliger added a solo block and seven block assists. Campbell Boddicker had nine kills, with four coming in the fifth set. Lily Sanchez and MaKenna Schlekeway each scored seven kills and Sanchez also had 30 set assists.
Macey Wathan led Stevens (23-14) with 17 kills.
