The Walworth County Commissioners passed a motion at Monday’s meeting (December 19th) to support a project for a regional jail that would be located in Mobridge. Kyle Jensen, representing the City of Mobridge, told the commissioners that it would be a brand new facility with 52 beds and operated by the City of Mobridge. Jensen said Campbell, Corson, Dewey, Potter, and McPherson counties have already given letters of support for the project. Former commissioner Rick Cain told the board that two things are needed in order for the project to work in Mobridge – 1) the state would have to fund the jail, and 2) legislative action would be needed to authorize court proceedings to be held in that facility. Cain also said cutting transportation costs will benefit the county’s budget.
Jensen stated several reasons why having a regional jail in Mobridge is a good option.
Sheriff Josh Boll is also supportive of the Mobridge regional jail project.
Commissioner Duane Mohr made the motion to give a letter of support to the project, and all five commissioners voted in favor of it.
