South Dakota inventory of all hogs and pigs on December 1, 2022, was 2.08 million head, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. This was up 3% from December 1, 2021, but unchanged from September 1, 2022.
Breeding hog inventory, at 290,000 head, was up 9% from December 1, 2021, but down 3% from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 1.79 million head, was up 3% from last year, and up 1% from last quarter.
The September – November 2022 South Dakota pig crop, at 1.73 million head, was up 4% from 2021. Sows farrowed during the period totaled 143,000 head, up 8% from last year. The average pigs saved per litter was 12.10 for the September – November period, compared to 12.50 last year.
South Dakota hog producers intend to farrow 140,000 sows during the December 2022 – February 2023 quarter, up 9% from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago. Intended farrowings for March – May 2023 are 144,000 sows, up 7% from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago.
