The Pierre Regional Airport finished 2022 with over 16,000 (16,129) people having taken flights out of Pierre.
City commissioner Jamie Huizenga says the weather put a damper on December enplanements, but it was still a good year.
Because Pierre’s airport surpassed the 10,000 boardings number, it’s eligible for $1-million in Essential Air Service funds from the federal Department of Transportation.
Denver Air Connection has the current EAS contract for the Pierre Regional Airport, which runs through May 31, 2023. DAC submitted three options for the upcoming EAS contract:
Huizenga says the city looks at several factors when deciding what option to recommend to the USDOT, but ultimately the USDOT makes the decision.
Denver Air’s two-year bid for the current EAS contract was about $9.5 million ($9,554,014), compared to the $11.9 million or $13.9 million options provided for the upcoming EAS contract.
DAC currently provides 12 flights per week between Pierre and the Denver International Airport. As of Nov. 1, 2022, the days with single flights have changed to Mondays and Thursdays. There are now two flights per day on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
