Friday (Jan. 6, 2023) at 5pm CT is the registration deadline for an educational workshop about growing field peas, lentils or chickpeas being held next week in Fort Pierre.
The South Dakota Pulse Crop Growers and Council will host the event with speakers from South Dakota State University and North Dakota State University covering areas such as weed and disease management, variety selection, food quality and utilization.
Pulse crops can be a good fit into cropping systems, especially in areas where precipitation is limited such as central and western South Dakota. They are harvested earlier than many common crops and are therefore also an excellent fit for crop rotations that include winter wheat. The crops have other benefits including:
-
being well adapted to no till production,
-
fixing their own nitrogen,
-
allowing producers an opportunity to manage weeds with alternative chemistries and
-
producing an excellent homegrown source of protein.
The pulse crops event will be held Tuesday (Jan. 10, 2023) at the AmericInn in Fort Pierre from 9:45am-3:30pm CT. CCA credits will be available and lunch is included. To preregister or for more information, email director@sdpulsecouncil.org.
