MARCH 8, 2023:
The Pierre City Commission has approved the budget supplement for the additional funding needed to build four pickleball courts in Griffin Park.
At last week’s commission meeting (Feb. 28, 2023), the Commission agreed to pay American Contracting nearly $294-thousand ($293,970) for the contractor-related work necessary to build the courts. City labor, fencing, funds and other materials will be used to complete the project.
The Capital Area Pickleball Association serves as a fundraising arm for the project and is contributing at least $200,000 toward it.
Construction of the 8,800 square foot pickleball development is expected to begin this spring and be complete by the end of 2023.
MARCH 1, 2023:
Plans to build four pickleball courts in Pierre’s Griffin Park are moving forward.
This week (Feb. 28, 2023), the City Commission agreed to pay American Contracting nearly $294-thousand ($293,970) for the contractor-related work necessary to build the courts. They also approved a budget supplement giving the City permission to spend more than was originally allotted for the project.
The Capital Area Pickleball Association serves as a fundraising arm for the project and is contributing at least $200,000 toward it.
City Administrator Kristi Honeywell says it’s been a challenging project to advance. She says it went to bid twice and both times the estimates were substantially higher than initial estimates.
Bryan Tipton, City Parks and Recreation Director, says Pierre will use its staff to complete some of the work that was originally intended to be completed by a third-party contractor. He says there will be significant cost savings if city workers handle the site preparations, landscaping and fencing work.
Construction of the 8,800 square foot development is expected to begin this spring and be complete by the end of 2023.
JANUARY 18, 2023:
The Pierre City Commission approved a request to bid the construction of four pickleball courts just north of the baseball field in Griffin Park. Proposals for the 8,800 square foot development are due back on Feb. 2, 2023; if awarded, the project is expected to be complete before the end of 2023.
The project was originally bid in July 2022; all bids were rejected for being well above the estimated cost.
The project is a public-private partnership. The Capital Area Pickleball Assoc. brought the project forward and is serving as its fundraising arm. The City supplied the land, agreed to put $50,000 toward the project, will oversee the development and retain ownership of the courts.
