PIERRE – An exciting opportunity awaits Pierre Governor boys wrestler Josh Rydberg.
On Thursday, Rydberg signed a wrestling letter of intent with the University of Sioux Falls, which will begin competition in the NSIC in the 2023-24 school year.
Rydberg has 70 match wins in his Pierre career and is 33-6 in his senior season heading into the 3A regional tournament on February 18.
Rydberg, who wrestles as a heavyweight even though he is right now at about 225 pounds, won his weight class this season in tournaments at Mandan, North Dakota, Brookings and Mitchell.
Last April, Rydberg went 8-0 at the National AAU Twin Rivers Duals and achieved All-American status after beating state heavyweight champions from Montana and Texas.
Rydberg will wrestle at USF for Head Coach Matt Meuleners, who won Division II heavyweight national championships at Northern State in 2011 and 2012. Like Rydberg, Meuleners wrestled under weight as a heavyweight.
Rydberg said that he welcomed the challenge of trying to be a collegiate wrestler.
How does Rydberg deal with being 225 pounds, yet wrestling heavyweights?
Rydberg said he was thrilled when he learned of the possibility of joining USF’s program.
Pierre Boys Wrestling Head Coach Sean Lewis said that wrestling under weight as a heavyweight may work out well for Rydberg in Sioux Falls.
Lewis said that Rydberg should be a great fit for USF, and vice versa.
Meuleners was asked what made him notice Rydberg.
