Gloria Sitting Crow, 66, of Red Scaffold, passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at Monument Health, Rapid City.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. MDT, Monday, March 13, 2023, at the Takini School Gym, Takini. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Red Scaffold. Wake services will be 7:00 p.m., Sunday, March 12, 2023, at the gym, with a procession from the Takini Junction at 4:30 p.m.
Gloria (Lone Eagle) Sitting Crow was born on May 27, 1956, to Romanus Bear Stops and Catherine Lone Eagle at Red Scaffold, SD. Gloria’s siblings are her sisters: Delores Durant of Denver, CO, Kathleen Garnette (deceased), Alvina Circle Bear (deceased), Romalee Bear Stops of Rapid City, SD, Earlene Rooks of Wambli, SD, Georgia Rooks of Wambli, SD; and four brothers: James (Connie) Bear Stops of Red Scaffold, SD, Kermit Bear Stops AKA “Horse” of Denver, CO, Melvin BadHand and Rodney BadHand both of Wambli, SD.
In 1974, Gloria met the love of her life, Vernell Sitting Crow, at the Rosebud Celebration.
Vernell and Gloria were married on October 24, 1975. To this celebration, three boys and four girls were born: Jennifer Chasing Hawk of Denver, Herbert Austin Sitting Crow of Sioux Falls, Troy Sitting Crow of Red Scaffold, Lena Sitting Crow of Red Scaffold, LaRee Sitting Crow of Rapid City, Cheron Sitting Crow, and Justin Sitting Crow of Red Scaffold. Gloria had 28 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, and she saw her 5th generation from her father, Romanus Bear Stops. Gloria’s most important gifts were her many takojoas, with raising Isidro and William. Gloria was a foster parent to Dawson White Mag Pie of Cherry Creek, SD.
Gloria received her General Education Degree at a private school in Hawarden, Iowa. Gloria then went on to get her bachelor’s degree in education at the Cheyenne River Lakota College in Eagle Butte, South Dakota. Gloria also continued her learning at BHSU in Spearfish, SD and Si Tanka College in Eagle Butte, SD. This led to Gloria’s passion for teaching and learning.
Gloria was a CNA at Fargo, North Dakota. With her passion for children, Gloria became a teacher at Red Scaffold School. She then went on to become a Head Start Teacher at various centers on CRST. Although not in the classroom, Gloria continued to serve children as the Disability Manager and Nutrition Services at the Head Start Center. Still serving children, Gloria was a Paraprofessional at Takini School and Cheyenne Eagle Butte Schools. Gloria knew that she wanted to advocate for student success and served as a Takini School Board Member for many, many years.
You could find Gloria at any of her children or takojas school events cheering them on. Gloria was very spiritual and would pray for all. Gloria loved to pass on her values and traditions to her children, takojas, and relatives. Gloria always encouraged her children to sing so they could learn to speak Lakota. You could find Gloria singing her Lakota songs behind any drum group. Gloria was a true Lakota language preservationist by speaking and teaching others the language. Gloria was a champion traditional dancer. Gloria was every essence of her Lakota name Wa’chante Wa’wokiye Win (Helps with Kindness).
Gloria started her journey to the spirit world on February 28, 2023, in Rapid City, S D. She was met with open arms by her daughter Cheron, foster son Dawson, her parents, and her tiospaye who have gone on before her. Gloria will be immensely missed by her husband Vernell, children, sisters, brothers, takokjas, colleagues, friends, and the rest of her tiospaye.
