U.S. pork exports remained robust in February 2023, achieving double-digit increases over last year in both volume and value, according to data released by USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation. Beef exports were lower year-over-year but improved from the low totals posted in January.
February pork exports totaled nearly 222,000 metric tons (mt), up 11% from a year ago, while export value increased 10% to $596 million. USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom says Mexico was once again the leading driver of this growth, but noted that markets such as the Caribbean, Central America and the ASEAN region were also key contributors.
U.S. beef exports totaled just over 105,000 mt in February, down 3% from a year ago, while export value dropped 16% to about $758 million. Halstrom said February exports to Japan and South Korea increased slightly from a year ago, though value trended lower. He added that beef exports are trending significantly higher year-over-year to Mexico and the Caribbean.
