Let’s check out some fun and interesting stories from the past week…
1. A lady in Virginia just adopted a 40-pound cat. His name is Patches. A shelter posted a photo on Facebook and asked if someone wanted to adopt “the largest cat anyone has ever seen.” Turned out someone did. They’re putting him on a special diet and exercise plan so he can slim down. They say he’s very sweet. His previous owner just obviously overfed him. (Here’s a shot of him with his new owner.)
2. A 64-year-old guy in the U.K. was sleeping when his dog chomped down on his big toe so hard, it hit bone. But it turns out he’s lucky his dog is a psycho. He never felt it, because his whole foot was numb from diabetes. So in the end, his dog probably saved his leg and maybe his life.
3. Turn up that radio! A new study found listening to music can help prevent dementia as you get older. Learning to play an instrument can help too.
4. Organ donors save lives every day, but this story out of Colorado is different. A hearse was recently transporting a body so the person’s organs could be donated, when the driver lost control in the snow and went off the road. He crashed through a barricade and almost drove off a CLIFF. But the hearse ended up teetering on the edge of it, and he survived. Officials say the weight of the body in back is what kept the hearse from falling. (Here’s a photo.)
5. A Florida man and his 13-year-old daughter were stranded in a lake for almost an hour on Saturday after their jet ski sank. But a search-and-rescue crew found them, and they’re okay. (Here’s the video.)
6. Tito’s Vodka For Dog People, a program created by Tito’s Handmade Vodka dedicated to rescuing and protecting pets, announced it’s teaming up with BISSELL Pet Foundation to launch an exclusive capsule collection that embraces the “walktail” – a cocktail you take on a walk with your family, friends, and of course – your dogs. As a part of the collaboration, 100% of the net proceeds from every purchase will be donated to BISSELL Pet Foundation in an effort to support its goal to find a loving home for every pet. (Here’s a video.)
7. There is a bald eagle at a sanctuary in Missouri named Murphy that thought a rock was an egg. He went viral a few weeks ago, and now there’s an update. His rock never hatched . . . but he did get a baby. He got so protective of the rock, he had to be moved to a different enclosure away from the other eagles. And around the same time, someone brought in an eagle chick that got blown out of its nest by strong winds. They put it in with Murphy, and he immediately took to it. He’s been feeding it fish, and they say the two of them are “bonding beautifully.” It’s the first time he’s ever been a dad. (Here’s a video.)
8. A 16-year-old in Texas was at a rock-climbing gym recently, when his heart stopped. Paramedics did CPR for two hours before they finally called it. But then five minutes later, he came back. His parents are calling it a miracle.
9. A kid in England wrote the cops a letter after his toy car got run over by a real car. He claimed the person did it on purpose and asked them to “catch the bad guy.” So a cop named Sophie Williams sent him a letter back. She told him to remember there are more good people out there than bad. And she used her own money to buy him a new car to replace the one he lost.
10. A 71-year-old guy with Guillain-Barré syndrome was left almost totally paralyzed from it last year. But he says music cured him. His doctors wanted to see if music therapy could, quote, “open up his brain.” He loves The Carpenters, so he started listening to them every night before bed, and trying his best to sing along. His goal was to walk and talk again, and now he’s doing both. He just wanted to walk through his front door, but he’s recently been walking two miles a day.
11. A guy named Dave Urban works at a Lowe’s store in Philadelphia, and recently went the extra mile to help a kid named William, who has cerebral palsy. He saw William’s parents looking at PVC pipes and offered to help. Then he found out they were trying to build a set of parallel bars to help him learn to walk. So Dave stepped up and built it for them right there in the store. His advice to people is go the extra mile, and it’ll pay you back 100 times over.
12. Passengers at Oakland International Airport in California paid tribute to a 100-year-old World War Two vet the other day. A Southwest employee made it happen. He got everyone in the terminal to sing “God Bless America”.
13. How cool is this? A two-year-old kid was watching construction going on outside his house. So the workers stopped and used a front-end loader to fill his Tonka truck up with dirt. Now a video of it is making the rounds online.
