South Dakota State University Extension is pleased to announce the participants in the 2023-2024 AgritourismSD class.
Those selected to participate in Class 2 include Tina Brents-Barnhart, of Rapid City; Michelle Haukaas, of Mission; Paula and April Hamilton, of Hitchcock; Kelly Brandlee, of Pierpont; Michael Gubbels, of Canton; Crystal Ashley, of Pukwana; Frank and Laura Moser, of New Underwood; Nick Livermont, of Allen; Josh and Alicia Kropuenske, of Hot Springs; Dawn Nagel, of Gettysburg; and Chanda Knoof, of Blackhawk. The program lasts 18 months and will start in May.
AgritourismSD is a program for South Dakotans with direct ties to a farm or ranch and less than 10 years of agritourism experience. The first class started in May 2021 with a cohort of 16, who completed their final workshop in March 2023.
The class focuses on five areas of agritourism: tours, accommodations, education, events, and local foods. Participants learn through study trips, interactive workshops, case studies, web-based interaction, and networking. Case studies showcase the good, bad, and ugly of starting an agritourism business.
“The goal is to help the participants start or grow their agritourism business and enhance their knowledge of the many factors important to their success,” said Stacy Hadrick, SDSU Extension Associate and AgritourismSD program coordinator.
AgritourismSD is funded by a United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture Beginner Farmer and Rancher Development Program grant through SDSU Extension and offered in partnership with the South Dakota Department of Tourism.
