PIERRE – Two comeback wins in one night have given Pierre Governor Baseball its first winning streak of the season.
The Governors rallied from early deficits in both games Friday in a doubleheader sweep of Sioux Falls Lincoln 8-5 and 4-3 at Hyde Stadium. Pierre has now won three straight after losing their first five games of the season.
SF Lincoln scored four runs in the first inning of the opener before the Governors scored a run in the third, two in the fourth and then two in the fifth to take the lead. SF Lincoln tied the game with a run in the top of the sixth before Pierre scored three in the bottom of the sixth. Brecken Krueger hit an RBI triple to put the Governors in front, followed by a two-run single by Deegan Houska. Houska drove in three runs. Lincoln Kienholz hit a two-run home run. Jett Zabel struck out seven in six innings as the winning pitcher. Jack Merkwan earned the save.
Charlie Simpson had a game-ending sacrifice fly in a two-run bottom of the seventh to win the second game for the Governors. Houska had tied the game earlier in the inning with an RBI single. After SF Lincoln led 3-0 through an inning and a half, Pierre scored twice in the second on a fielder’s choice by Merkwan and an RBI single by Houska. JJ Bucholz was the winner and Ridge Leimbach had a two-inning save, combining on a two-hitter.
