BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The chief suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway has admitted to killing her. New details in the killing emerged Wednesday (Oct. 18, 2023) as Joran van der Sloot pleaded guilty to extorting money from Holloway’s mother. He confessed in submitted court filings to bludgeoning Holloway to death on a beach in Aruba before dragging her body out to sea. He had sought a quarter of a million dollars from Holloway’s mother in exchange for information about the location of her daughter’s remains. His confession resolves a case that has captivated the public’s attention for nearly 20 years. His 20-year sentence for extortion will run concurrently with prison time he’s serving for another killing in Peru.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A federal judge has agreed to delay Joran van der Sloot’s trial on extortion charges until later this year in order to give his defense more time to prepare. Van der Sloot is the chief suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway. He is charged with trying to extort money from the missing teen’s mother in exchange for revealing where to find her daughter’s remains. A U.S. magistrate judge on Tuesday (Sept. 12, 2023) granted van der Sloot’s request to postpone the trial. It is now expected to occur sometime after Dec. 4. Federal prosecutors did not oppose the continuance. The trial date will be set by a separate order by a district judge.

Joran van der Sloot was arraigned in federal court in Birmingham, Alabama, on Friday (June 9, 2023). He was flown to the U.S. on Thursday from Peru, where he’s serving a 28-year sentence after confessing to killing a Peruvian woman. Holloway disappeared on the Caribbean island of Aruba. A judge declared her dead, but her body has never been found. Van der Sloot is accused of seeking $250,000 from Holloway’s mother in exchange for disclosing the location of the young woman’s body.

Joran van der Sloot’s extradition is wanted in the U.S. on one count each of extortion and wire fraud — the only charges to have ever linked the Dutch citizen to Holloway’s disappearance on the Caribbean island of Aruba. Holloway was 18 when she vanished during a trip with classmates and was last seen leaving a bar with van der Sloot. Her body has never been found and no charges related to her disappearance have been filed. Van der Sloot has been serving a 28-year sentence in Peru for the murder of a Peruvian woman.

LIMA, Peru (AP) — The chief suspect in the unsolved 2005 disappearance of American student Natalee Holloway is being transferred to a prison near Peru’s capital ahead of his pending extradition to the United States to face charges linked to her vanishing. The government of Peru, where Dutch citizen Joran van der Sloot was serving a 28-year sentence for the murder of a Peruvian woman, authorized his extradition to the U.S. in May. Van der Sloot’s lawyer said is client was being taken by land from the Challapalca prison in Peru’s southern Andes to the Piedras Gordas prison on the outskirts of Lima.
