SIOUX FALLS – The great shot put season for Pierre’s Reese Terwilliger has resulted in a state championship.
Thursday at the SDHSAA State Track & Field Championships at Howard Wood Field, Terwilliger won the girls AA shot put with a mark of 44 feet, one inch, bettering her own school record that she set in April. Terwilliger’s best put was nearly two feet better than the runner-up, Taryn Hermansen of Aberdeen Central (42’2 ¾”).
Terwilliger, who won this event six times outdoors during the regular season, is the first Governor individual track and field state champion since 2019, when Mackenzie Rath won the girls discus.
For Terwilliger, it was easy to describe her feeling after winning the championship.
Terwilliger had a feeling when she released her best throw that it was very good.
Terwilliger said that she knew that she needed something special for her best throw.
Also for Pierre on Thursday, Kali Ringstmeyer was disqualified for a false start in the prelims of the AA girls 100 meters. In 2022, Ringstmeyer missed qualifying for the 100 finals by just .02.
