After a tough week let’s enjoy some positive vibes with these Feel Good Friday stories.
1. A 12-year-old Texas girl got an award for bravery this week after saving her entire family back in March. Everyone else in her home . . . her mom and four other kids . . . passed out from carbon monoxide. But she stayed calm, called 911, and firefighters saved them.
2. A guy in Kentucky coasted into the closest gas station while running on fumes . . . bought a lottery ticket while he was filling up . . . and won a million bucks.
3. A student who uses a wheelchair graduated from Seton Hall this week, and her service dog got a diploma too. His name is Justin, and he went to all her classes with her. So the school gave him his own honorary degree. He grabbed the diploma in his mouth, and the crowd went nuts. (Here’s the video.)
4. We’ve seen plenty of cats stuck in trees, but this might be a first. Firefighters in Ohio had to rescue a squirrel from a tree on Tuesday. It was someone’s pet squirrel. It couldn’t get down after its leash got tangled up in a branch. (Here are the photos.)
5. A 40-year-old guy from Holland was paralyzed from the waist down in 2011. But now he’s walking again thanks to a new brain implant doctors came up with. It bypasses the part of his spine that was injured, and sends signals to another implant that tells his muscles to move. He still has to use a walker, but it could be a huge development for people with spinal cord injuries.
6. A news station in Atlanta just did a big profile on a high school therapy dog named Duck. He got the name when he failed out of duck-hunting school. But it turned out he was great with special needs kids. One of them is a girl named Alyssa Biggs, who he started sitting next to in class. And bonding with him helped her figure out what she wants to do for a career. With Duck’s help, she recently got certified to be a therapy dog handler.
7. A video of a female orangutan checking out a baby at the Louisville Zoo is going viral. They’re on opposite sides of a glass wall. She literally points right at the kid like she’s saying, “Hey, bring that baby over here.” (Here’s the video.)
8. We heard about these two last fall, but now it’s official. A 93-year-old from Ohio named Joy Ryan has now been to all 63 of America’s National Parks. Her grandson started taking her because she was 85 and had never seen the ocean, or even a mountain before. Their final trip was to the National Park of American Samoa. They crossed it off their list last week. (Here’s a photo.)
9. A type of bird called an ivory-billed woodpecker was thought to be extinct. But a group of researchers just spotted one on a wildlife camera they set up near a trail in Louisiana. The last confirmed sighting was way back in 1944.
10. A homeless guy in Phoenix named Joseph Collins saved a woman and her two daughters from a fire last Thursday. They were asleep in their second-floor apartment when she woke up and saw flames. Joseph heard her calling for help and scaled a fence into her yard. She had to drop each kid from a window, and he caught both of them. He also caught her two dogs, and then she jumped down. She says he absolutely saved their lives.
11. Two guys in Ohio were about to head to the dump with an old couch that was sitting outside when they found four kittens living inside it. They eventually got them out, and their mom came back, so they’re okay. There’s a video of them sleeping in a cat bed, so it looks like they’ll be put up for adoption soon.
