We celebrate the life of Vicki Renee Bown Larson a light in our lives, beloved mother and Mimi, cherished sister, and beautiful friend. Vicki’s life was a testament to her unwavering love, resilience, and the extraordinary impact she had on those fortunate enough to know her.
Born on October 20, 1952, Vicki entered the world as one of the first babies welcomed into the newly established Gettysburg Memorial Hospital. She was the sixth of seven daughters, blessed to be part of the vibrant Bown family, alongside two brothers. A constant peacekeeper, there was much peace to be kept with so many kids in the house.
In 1972, Vicki married Vaughn Larson, and they were blessed with the precious gift of two children. Vicki’s favorite role was that of mom to Tony and Amber – until she became a grandma. Being surrounded by her family and friends – loving them well – was her favorite role.
Throughout her life, Vicki showcased remarkable courage and determination in her career. She dedicated over three decades of her life to the farm agency, starting at the local ASC office and eventually making her way to the Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. Her relentless pursuit of personal growth took her from the comfort of small-town, South Dakota, to the bustling city streets, where she fearlessly tackled new challenges with grace and tenacity.
In 2014, she retired and relocated to Omaha to be closer to Amber and her grandsons, Noah, Liam, and Sawyer. Being back in the Midwest, she was also able to make frequent trips to visit Tony and his family: wife Katie, sons Ashton and Aiden, and daughter Ava, as well as a lot of quality time with her siblings and their families. During her time in Washington, D.C. Vicki participated in 4 Three Day Breast Cancer walks with her team. Collectively over the four years the team raised more than $250,000 for breast cancer research. Between walking and training, the team covered more than 500 miles and friendships were made that have lasted a lifetime.
Vicki loved pretty things. She possessed a keen eye for design, and she naturally created cozy and beautiful spaces – both inside and out. Whether it was designing gardens or crafting warm and inviting homes, she infused every space with her signature touch, leaving a lasting impression on all who entered.
Much of Vicki’s free time was spent enjoying and supporting the performing arts, and she delighted in sharing her passion with loved ones. Whether the ballet, the symphony, musical theatre, or even the church choir, her love for the stage was something she carried with her throughout her life.
Even in her final years, as she faced her biggest challenges battling dementia, Vicki’s smile lit up every room and she continued to show that to know her, is to love her. Vicki’s kindness and genuine love for people never left, even as so much was changing. She left a lasting impression on the people who cared for her during this time, and they loved her – as people have always loved her.
Today isn’t goodbye, as we celebrate a life well-lived and a heart that overflowed with love, knowing that we will meet again. Vicki’s legacy will live on in her children, grandchildren, siblings, dear friends, and all those who were fortunate enough to be part of her full and beautiful life.
Vicki is survived by her son, Tony (Katie); daughter, Amber; grandchildren: Ashton, Noah, Ava, Liam, Aiden, and Sawyer; sisters: Janet, DiAnn (Jim), Robbie (Dick), Kate; and brother, Jeff; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Dorothy; brother, Jerry; and sisters, Donna and Joanne.
In lieu of flowers, any memorials received will be given in her name to Vicki’s favorite organizations.
