Here are some positive stories that we’ve compiled to share with you.
1. More and more research is finding that pets are good for our mental health. Even petting other people’s dogs can give your mental health a boost. (Unless it turns out their dog BITES, of course.)
2. Someone in England asked their neighbors if they’d “take their trash out” while they were away. But instead of just taking it out to the curb, they took it out on the town and staged a photoshoot. They stuck googly eyes on it, and got shots of it at the store . . . out walking a dog . . . and out at a playground where it went down a slide.
3. You may have heard about this group before. Early in the pandemic, a guy in New Jersey started a nonprofit called “I Want to Mow Your Lawn“, where you can volunteer to mow lawns for senior citizens and other people who need help. Now it’s back in the news because it’s expanded to 46 states, and recently went international. A handful of volunteers have popped up in Toronto. And a retired Marine in South Korea recently started doing it for widows of fallen soldiers. You can sign up to volunteer at IWantToMowYourLawn.com
4. A 75-year-old in Missouri named Peggy Moore hasn’t had A/C all summer after a repair guy basically scammed her. She hired him in February and paid $5,000, but he never got her A/C going. So it’s been 90 degrees in her home. Another A/C guy heard about it and stepped up to help though. He offered to fix it for free, and even upgraded her to a bigger unit. He told a reporter that anytime you can help, you should, and that “it needs to happen more often.”
5. Someone in Alaska spotted a month-old baby walrus all alone, about four miles inland, and saved it. A place called the Alaska SeaLife Center is taking care of it. They say the babies are used to having their mom around to keep them warm. So workers are providing it with, quote, “24/7 cuddle care.” (Here’s a photo.)
6. A guy in England bought a classic car from 1933, and got obsessed with the history of it. So he planned a road trip and drove to visit all of its previous owners. One guy said it was his first car after getting his license in 1968. His mom is 97 now and also got a visit.
7. CNN did a story on a former fashion designer in New York named Barbara Lakin, who restores old Barbie dolls and makes clothes for them. She donates them to a place called Little Shop of Kindness, where asylum-seekers and migrant families can shop for free.
8. A group of people on a small boat in Massachusetts had a very close encounter with some humpback whales the other day. They shared the footage on Instagram.
9. The owner of a diner in Ocean City, Maryland is using something his great-grandmother did during the Great Depression to offset the rising costs he’s seen from inflation. She used to make soap using bacon grease. So he’s been saving all the grease from his diner, and started a soap company on the side. You can check it out at BumbleSoap.com. No . . . he says it doesn’t smell like bacon.
10. A four-year-old boy in Connecticut was playing in his backyard when a bear showed up on Saturday. But he’s okay after his family’s golden retriever chased the bear away. (Here’s the video.)
11. A guy in California was doing work in the yard of his parents’ house where he lives now, and found an old action figured he lost 35 years ago. It’s an Emperor Palpatine action figure from “Star Wars”. It’s not worth anything, but he says he wouldn’t sell it anyway because it’s too sentimental. He cleaned it up and has it displayed on a shelf in his living room. (Here’s a photo.)
12. A record 891 people fired up 500 tabletop fire pits to break the record for the most s’mores created consecutively. The feat, organized by the Solo Stove company in Grapevine, Texas, broke a Gunness World Record set in 2018 by the Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee. For those who were never Girl Scouts, s’mores are marshmallow and chocolate sandwiches toasted between graham crackers.
