PIERRE, S.D. – The Pierre Athletic Coaches Association (PACA) named their Avera Riggs High School Athletes of the Week for last week. The two selections were Emily Mikkelsen of the Lady Governor basketball team and James Lees of the Governor Wrestling Team. Mikkelsen led the girls basketball team in their win over Douglas with 22 points, 7 assists, 3 steals and 3 rebounds. Emily’s point total pushed her career mark over the 1000 point scored club becoming just the 4th girls in Lady Gov Basketball history to accomplish that feat. .
James Lees went 2-1 on the weekend in duals for the Governor wrestlers. After falling in his first match to second rated Nolan Smith of RC Central, James got to play hero for the remainder of the day. James pinned Clayton Smith of Sturgis to pull out the dual win for the Governors. In the final dual of the night, James earned a last second takedown to defeat Hunter McMath of RC Stevens. The takedown won the match for James, flipped the dual, and set his teammate up for the possibility of winning the dual. James’ efforts helped the Governors go 3-0 at East West Duals beating #1 and #2 ranked teams in the state.
Mikkelsen was nominated for the award by her head coach Scott DeBoer and Lees earned his nomination from head coach Shawn Lewis.
