The Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) is pleased to join South Dakota manufacturers to celebrate their industry and the value they bring to the state during Manufacturing Week, Oct. 6-13, 2023.
“Manufacturing is a key industry in South Dakota, and I think most would be surprised by the types of businesses and the products made in their back yard,” said Chris Schilken, GOED Commissioner. “We are thrilled that so many amazing companies call our great state home.”
Today, in South Dakota, manufacturing jobs are high-tech, high-paying, and in high-demand. From Girl Scout cookies to medical devices, electronic billboards to firetrucks, South Dakota manufacturers create products that are used and enjoyed in everyday lives.
Undeniably important, manufacturing is South Dakota’s 4th largest industry in the state by gross domestic product. The manufacturing industry also employs more than 10% of South Dakota’s workforce, exceeding the state’s average wage by 18.5%.
Manufacturing in South Dakota continues to thrive, while the industry has declined across much of the nation in the past decade. Employment has increased by 9.5% to more than 45,000 employees across the state, and manufacturing GDP has grown 39.2% to $5.35 billion.
