FAITH – Faith played hard, but a determined Stanley County team again used its strong running game and punishing defense to assure a home first-round playoff game.
Colton Brady rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns and Stanley County’s defense forced six turnovers Friday in a 38-8 road win over the Faith Longhorns.
Faith (1-7) became only the second team this season to score first against Stanley County. After Caden Selby intercepted a Broch Zeeb pass, he then threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Drew Harper and the Longhorns led 8-0 just over three minutes into the game.
Stanley County (7-1) answered on their next possession. Brady ran for 37 yards of a 52-yard drive, including the last nine for a touchdown. The score was 8-8 after a two-point conversion.
Paxton Deal intercepted a Selby pass at the Faith 27 three plays later and ran the pick back to the Faith one yard line, from where Brady scored one play later and SC led 16-8 with 6:40 left in the first quarter.
Stanley County had a chance to increase the lead just before halftime but lost a fumble with seven seconds left.
On the first play of the second half, the Buffaloes’ Ehran Cantu recovered a fumble at the Faith 12, and Zeeb ran in a four-yard touchdown three plays later for a 24-8 Stanley County lead.
Cooper Schuelke’s 39-yard kickoff return put Faith at the Stanley County 24. Two plays later, the Longhorns were at the Buffaloes’ one-yard line when Selby was stopped on four straight quarterback keepers. SC kept its 24-8 lead after three quarters.
Landon Bame had the second of his two interceptions on the first play of the fourth quarter and Zeeb found Barret Schweitzer on a 34-yard touchdown pass three plays later, increasing the Stanley County lead to 32-8.
Schweitzer then scored the game’s final points with 5:52 left on a 13-yard touchdown carry.
Deal also had two interceptions and Cantu had two fumble recoveries for Stanley County.
