PIERRE – The final regular season home game for the Pierre Governors assured them of at least one and possibly two home playoff games.
Pierre scored 48 points in the first quarter Thursday on their way to a 64-6 win over the Douglas Patriots at Hollister Field at Phil Trautner Stadium. Pierre ended the regular season tied with Yankton for the best seed point average in 11AA at 43.444, but earned the top seed for the playoffs due to a 27-14 win at Yankton on September 15.
Cade Kaiser threw five touchdown passes for the Governors (8-1), two to Jett Zabel and one each to Tyan Buss, George Stalley and Keenan Scott. Trey Lewis had a 90-yard kickoff return for a score for Pierre, who also had a touchdown pass from Kaleb Lounsberry to Trevor Rounds, a Hayden Schaffer scoring run and a 24-yard field goal by Ryan Barry.
Pierre will try to become the first team in the playoff era of South Dakota high school football to win seven consecutive state championships. The Governors will host eighth-seed Spearfish on Thursday in the first round of the 11AA playoffs.
