SIOUX FALLS – Jared Lutmer met his goal, completing an excellent senior season with a championship.
Lutmer became the second Pierre cross country runner to win a state title Saturday at the SDHSAA Cross Country Championships at Yankton Trail Park.
Lutmer, who had won four events in the regular season, easily won the AA boys race in 15:15.42, over 16 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Grady Loos of Rapid City Stevens. Lutmer’s time was the best in any of the three classifications, earning him the All-American honor.
Lutmer joins Travis Fitzke as Pierre’s individual cross country state champions. Fitzke won in his senior year, 2007.
As a team, the Governor boys were seventh. Caleb Morris was ninth, Haeden Wheelhouse finished 45th, Ian Rounds ran 62nd, Jayden Brandt was 82nd, Mason Ward-Zeller was 85th and Alex Oedekoven was 113th.
The Governor girls were ninth as a team. Freshman Jayne Lees was best for Pierre, running 19th in 19:22.79. Mason Berg ran 33rd, Harper Shaffer was 46th, Jazzlyn Rombough finished 65th, Gwen Richter was 68th and Charlee Williams-Smith ran 77th.
Sioux Falls Lincoln won its fifth boys championship since 2016. The Patriots scored 115 points, 14 better than Sturgis.
The Brandon Valley girls won the team championship for the first time since 2017. The Lynx won easily with 52 points. Spearfish was second with 90.
