Betty Hageman, 86, Hoven, SD, died Sunday, October 15, 2023 at her home. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:30 AM, Friday, October 20, 2023 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Hoven, with Father Brian P. Simon, Celebrant. Interment follows at the Church Cemetery. Placing the Pall on Betty’s casket will be granddaughters Kaylee Herreid, Jessi Fuller, Makenzie Ovenstone, Chelsea Hageman Kosel, Jaleesa Hendrickson, and Britanny Frost. Offertory gift bearers will be granddaughters Megan VanLiere, Kalecia Knippling, Erica Hageman, and Kimberly Hageman. Eucharistic Minister will be Ed Hartung, Mass servers will be Konrad Stuwe and Jack Stuwe and lector will be Betty’s daughter-in-law, Colleen. Musicians will be Alice Simon and St. Anthony’s Church Choir will sing “I Know That My Redeemer Lives”, “How Great Thou Art”, “On This Day, O Beautiful Mother”, “Song of Farewell”, and “On Eagle’s Wings”.
Visitation commences 5:00 PM Thursday at the Church with a 7:00 PM Wake Service.

Betty Louise Simon, daughter of Clara (Wirtz) and Henry J. Simon, was born at Hoven on January 11, 1937. She was raised in Hoven and attended St. Anthony’s Parochial School and Hoven High School (Class of 1955). She furthered her education at Sacred Heart Nursing School in Yankton, SD for one year and then returned to Hoven. She then completed her education at St. Mary’s School of Practical Nursing in Pierre, SD, graduating in August 1957. She took employment as an LPN at Holy Infant Hospital in Hoven. Betty married Jerome Hageman at Hoven on November 5, 1957. She continued working as a nurse for 1 ½ years and then stayed at home where she and Jerome raised nine children. They purchased and settled on the Nick Frost farm 1 ½ miles SW of Hoven. In 1994, they moved into Hoven where Betty lived the rest of her life. Betty was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church at Hoven and St. Anthony’s Altar Society. She was also a member of the Hoven Country Club and active at the Hoven Senior Center. Betty was an avid reader. She looked forward to her morning coffee with friends as well as Saturday night dinner at the Dakota Haus. Betty was recognized as a Hoven High School Honorary Referee for her many hours of cheering the school activities of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Betty is survived by five sons—Tom (Colleen) Hageman, Brian (Marci) Hageman, and Jerry (Peg) Hageman of Hoven, John (Patti) Hageman of Gilbert, AZ, and Steve (Angie) Hageman of Watertown, SD; four daughters—Karen Hageman-Snow (Gary) of Aberdeen, SD, Connie (Rob) Spindler and Theresa (Dave) Hunnel of Hoven, and Mary Jean (Chuck) Ortmeier of Wentworth, SD; two brothers—Jack (Joyce) Simon of Raytown, MO and David (Lisa) Simon of Shannon, IL; two sisters—Marjean (Lee) Stotz of Tolstoy, SD and Mary Jo Mueller of Cashten, WI; sister-in-law, Gail Simon of Aberdeen; 25 grandchildren; and 34 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by Jerome, her husband of 61 years, on April 18, 2019; Her father, Henry, on April 26, 1985; her mother, Clara, on April 7, 2008; three brothers (Norman, Jim, and, in infancy, Joseph); and two sisters (Janice Rausch and Gina Keltgen).
Casketbearers will be grandsons—Michael Hartung and Cody Hageman of Aberdeen; Dana Hageman, Jaxson Spindler, and Adam Hunnel of Hoven; Brandon Hageman of Fargo, ND; Jason Hageman of Sioux Falls, SD; and Dylan Ortmeier of Tea, SD.
