Walworth County Commissioner Scott Schilling would like to form an oversight committee of the Sheriff’s Department, to which he and local attorney John Von Wald would be appointed. Schilling presented his recommendations at Tuesday’s Walworth County Commission meeting.
Walworth County Sheriff Josh Boll clarified what Schilling referred to as “courtesy rides”.
Acting State’s Attorney Vaughn Beck suggested a third person be on the committee and Schilling agreed to have Deputy Sheriff Travis Bentz take that role. Commissioner Duane Mohr reminded the board that they do not have the power to tell the Sheriff how to run his office. A motion to appoint the oversight committee stalled due to a tie vote, as Commission Chairman Jim Houck had to leave the meeting early and was not present to vote. A second vote will be put on the next meeting’s agenda.
Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the commissioners approved wages for several county employees, including new Auditor Kim Dills and Highway Superintendent Tom Hannon.
Representatives with Carstensen Contracting were present to answer questions and concerns regarding the WEB open cut proposal on 134th Street. Gary Byre gave the commission an update on what will happen in that project.
The commission did not act on the proposal; they will wait until they can look over the contract.
The commission approved a motion to act as a sponsor for the merge of the River’s Edge Learning Center and Tiger Kids into a non-profit organization. This will allow them to apply for a community development block grant to expand and build a proposed 4,000 square foot building to accommodate more children in need of daycare in the county. Future plans include opening a daycare facility in Selby as well.
A motion passed to accept a bid to order a part and do repair work on the chair lift in the Courthouse. Repairing the current lift will cost the county just under $9700.00. Replacing the lift would be fifty to sixty thousand.
