At this week’s meeting (March 12, 2024), the Pierre City Commission approved more contracts to aid with construction this season.
R & W Construction was the lowest of three bidders for this year’s curb and gutter contract and was awarded the project for $242,364. Under this agreement, R & W will replace curb and gutter on 23 blocks of street. The infrastructure improvements allow storm water to properly move off streets; curb and gutter prevents water from penetrating street surfaces and causing them to crack or form potholes.
The commission also approved a $41,000 contract with Morris, Inc. to crush the concrete that was removed during previous curb and gutter work. “The material gets recycled,” said Josh Bible, Construction and Operations Manager. “We’ll use the crushed concrete for construction projects.”
The City Street Department is currently crack sealing various streets throughout Pierre. The team applies a sealant to cracks and seams on streets to prevent moisture from getting under the street surface and causing damage. When signs are displayed, please avoid parking in the construction area. Signs will be removed within 24 hours.
Sewer lining work is happening on both West Dakota and Missouri Avenues. The pipe lining will extend the life of those sewer lines. No disruption to traffic or services is expected.
The Highway 34 water main loop project is underway as well. This will add redundancy to water service on the eastern side of Pierre. There may be limited, short-term traffic disruptions along Highway 34 between Grant and Lincoln Avenues.
