AUGUST 14, 2024:
The Hughes County Highway Department has finished repairs on a six mile long section of 196th Street.
Highway Department staff replaced a stretch of road that was damaged and wet underneath. They dug out the wet, damaged area, layed in fabric, refilled the hole, and recompacted and leveled out the spot to match the road.
The Hughes County Highway Department appreciates everyone’s patience while the repairs were made.
AUGUST 9, 2024:
For the second time since April, the Hughes County Highway Department will temporarily close a six mile long section of 196th Street.
On Monday (Aug. 12, 2024), they will begin replacing a stretch of road that is damaged and wet underneath. Highway Department staff will be digging out the wet, damaged area, laying in fabric, refilling the hole, and recompacting and leveling out the spot to match the road. The closed part of 196th Street will be from its intersection with Highway 83, extending six miles to the west. The affected area is approximately 10 feet long and 26 feet wide.
The Hughes County Highway Department recommends that all traffic detour around to either Highway 14 or to 299th Avenue (a county road) during this time. Weather permitting, work is expected to be completed by Friday (Aug. 16, 2024).

MAY 2, 2024:
The Hughes County Highway Department has reopened a closed section of 196th Street.
The closed part of 196th Street was from its intersection with Highway 83, extending for six miles to the west. There are soft spots that are marked with orange flags. Please slow down and use caution when approaching these areas of the road.

The Hughes County Highway Department has temporarily closed a section of 196th Street.
The closed part of 196th Street is from its intersection with Highway 83, extending for six miles to the west. Until further notice, all traffic should detour to Highway 14.
