The Fort Pierre City Council has approved submitting paperwork to apply for additional financial assistance for the town’s water tank storage project. The funding would only be used if it’s needed, and if the city is under no obligation to pay back any unused dollars.
During a council meeting earlier this month (June 17, 2024), Paul Mehlhaff with the Central South Dakota Enhancement District said they’re short about $2-million for the current project.
That would bring the total to $2.4-million. However, Alderman Rick Cronin brought up the idea of changing the location of the proposed tank as a way to reduce the cost.
Alderman Todd Bernhard disagreed saying federal dollars already assigned to the project could be lost, if the town starts over.
Incidentally, there’s a water use restriction currently in effect in Fort Pierre until further notice. Another water use restriction goes into effect Wednesday night (June 26, 2024) at 10pm CT. The restrictions are needed while Mni Wiconi does work on its water treatment plant north of town.
