Teachers from across South Dakota are visiting historic sites this week (July 15-17, 2024) as part of the “2024 South Dakota Road Trip: Teachers Discovering History” tours.
Secretary of Education Joe Graves says teachers could pick from one of three routes– western, central or eastern.
Graves says the goal of the History Road Trip is to bolster participants’ knowledge of history, geography, government and civics in South Dakota.
Graves says there are about 90 teachers on each route. He says when the tours end Thursday, teachers have the opportunity to develop classroom lesson plans based on the information they’ve learned on the trip.
The central route includes stops at the Verendrye Monument and the Casey Tibbs South Dakota Rodeo Center in Fort Pierre and a tour of the State Capitol Building in Pierre. It also features visits to the Akta Lakota Museum and Cultural Center in Chamberlain, the Sutton Rodeo facility at Onida and the Dakota Sunset Museum in Gettysburg.
