Hobert “Tony” Hatten was born May 21, 1968, in Rapid City, SD to JoAnn Brings Hatten and Hobert Hatten, Sr. Hobert was the oldest of two children from this marriage. In 1974 the family moved to Denver, Colorado, and moved to Long Beach, California from 1978 to 1985. They then returned to Denver, CO until his death. Hobert attended West High School in Denver.
Tony was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor at the age of five years. He survived this tumor- removal trauma and went on to live a happy, normal life with his mother and brother, Orlando, despite being disabled. He loved playing basketball and watching football–he was a Raiders and Lakers fan. He was an expert at playing chess and checkers and won trophies in Pool/Billiards. Tony always said, “My Grandmother said I am Special” which was so uplifting to him during his lifetime.
Hobert suffered a stroke in 2018 and afterward he could not walk or talk. He was a survivor, very resilient and managed to live seven years with this disability. His maternal aunt, Donna Lafferty, was his legal guardian and caregiver for seven years until his death.
Hobert is survived by one brother, Orlando Hatten; three nieces and two nephews of Ada, Oklahoma; uncles: Ronald D. Lovejoy, Sr. and Kenneth Brings, Jr. of Eagle Butte, SD; maternal aunts: Donna Brings-Lafferty of Lakewood, CO, Maryann Lovejoy of Denver, CO, Inez Lewis of Oklahoma, and Opal Lovejoy of Sioux Falls, SD; cousins: Cheryle and Troy Lafferty of Lakewood, CO, Terry Lovejoy and children of Denver, CO, Kimberly and Sandy Lovejoy of Denver, CO, and Debbie Lovejoy of Sioux Falls, SD.
