LAS VEGAS (AP) — A jury in Nevada has found a Democratic former Las Vegas-area politician guilty of murder in the killing of an investigative journalist who wrote articles critical of his conduct in elected office. The verdict was read Wednesday (Aug. 28, 2024) in Clark County District Court. A penalty phase now begins to decide if Robert Telles faces life in prison. He’s been in jail since his arrest several days after Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German was found dead outside his home in September 2022. Prosecutors presented overwhelming evidence against Telles, including DNA tying him to German’s killing. Telles insisted he was “framed” in the case.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A jury has began deliberating in the trial of a former Democratic politician accused of killing an investigative journalist in Las Vegas. The panel ended Monday (Aug. 26, 2024) after about four hours and will return Tuesday morning. Prosecutors say Robert Telles blamed reporter Jeff German for writing stories that he believed destroyed his career, ruined his reputation and threatened his marriage. Telles has denied killing German in May 2022. Telles testified in his defense that evidence against him was tainted, planted or wrong. He said a massive conspiracy of office colleagues, real estate agents, business owners and police framed him for the crime. He faces life in prison if he’s found guilty.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The murder trial of a Las Vegas-area politician accused of killing an investigative reporter who wrote articles critical of him has begun, with jury selection set to resume for a second day. Questioning of prospective jurors began Monday (Aug. 12, 2024) after the judge rejected defendant Robert Telles’ last request to dismiss the case. Telles, a Democrat, once was the elected county public administrator of estates. He has pleaded not guilty in the 2022 stabbing death of reporter Jeff German. Prosecutors say Telles was motivated by articles German wrote about him and that Telles’ DNA was found under German’s fingernails after he died. Telles’ defense lawyer says Telles intends to testify in his defense.
