The South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation is hosting a “Fresh Start” virtual hiring event designed for justice-involved individuals this afternoon (Aug. 22, 2024).
Business Service Manager Lacey Johnson says while the event is open to all job seekers, they’re especially hoping people looking for a fresh start will use this opportunity to showcase their skills to potential employers.
Johnson says job seekers and employers who want to participate in today’s virtual hiring event should start by registering on the state Department of Labor’s website.
When participants “enter” the virtual “Fresh Start” event, Johnson says it’ll look similar to an in-person job fair.
She says the Department of Labor can offer some incentive for employers to hire people have been through the criminal justice system.
The Federal Bonding Program provides bonds as incentives for employers who are willing to hire justice-involved individuals including those recovering from opioid and other drug addictions. There is no cost for applicants or employers.
The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) is a federal income tax credit encouraging employers to hire individuals in certain targeted groups consistently experiencing high rates of unemployment due to a variety of employment barriers. This includes a person convicted or released from prison in the last 12 months after a felony conviction.
Johnson encourages employers to give a chance to people whose backgrounds may pose barriers to getting or keeping a job…..and she encourages job seekers to look into all types of different employment opportunities.
The “Fresh Start” virtual hiring event from 1-5pm CDT/12-4pm MDT.
