Other spring wheat production in South Dakota for 2024 is estimated at 31.1 million bushels, up 11% from last year, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. The 2024 area harvested for grain, at 635,000 acres, is down 2% from 2023. Producers planted 660,000 acres, down 11% from 2023. Yield, at 49 bushels per acre, is up 6 bushels from 2023.
Winter wheat production is estimated at 47.9 million bushels, up 52% from last year. The area harvested for grain totaled 760,000 acres, up 13% from 2023. Planted acreage totaled 860,000 acres, down 7% from a year earlier. The yield is a record high 63 bushels per acre, up 16 bushels from 2023.
Barley production is estimated at 285,000 bushels, down 39% from 2023. Area harvested for grain, at a record low 5,000 acres, is down 44% from last year. Planted acreage totaled 34,000 acres, down 11% from 2023. Average yield is 57 bushels per acre, up 5 bushels from last year.
Oat production is estimated at 7.74 million bushels, up 52% from 2023. Area harvested for grain, at 88,000 acres, is up 28% from last year. Planted acreage totaled 270,000 acres, up 2% from a year earlier. Yield, at 88 bushels per acre, is up 14 bushels per acre from last year.
