RAPID CITY – St. Thomas More claimed the State A Girls Tennis Team Championship Monday and Tuesday winning four of nine flights and totaling 488 placing points. Defending champion Sioux Falls Christian placed second with 443.5 while the Pierre Governors placed sixth for a second straight year after winning the tournament two years ago. The Governors totaled 231.5 points, which was actually a 56 point improvement from a year ago. Freshman Eliza Mayer was the top finisher for Pierre, taking second in the #5 Singles flight after entering the tournament as the #4 seed in the bracket. Fellow freshman Adrian Hand took four at #6 Singles while several other flights saw Pierre players taking fifth or sixth places. The Govs will lose two seniors from this year’s squad, but the future appears bright for the young team in the years ahead. The Class AA Tournament will be played Thursday and Friday as Sioux Falls Lincoln looks to repeat from last year’s championship.
